Temporomandibular Joint : Jaw Pain
What is temporomandibular joint (TMJ)?

The temporomandibular joint connects the jawbone to the skull, enabling the movement required for talking, chewing, and yawning. When this joint and its surrounding structures become dysfunctional, it leads to TMJ disorder. Common symptoms include jaw pain, clicking or popping sounds, limited jaw movement, headaches, and even earaches. It can greatly impact a person's quality of life, affecting their ability to eat, speak, and even sleep.
Causes of Jaw Pain:
-
Jaw Misalignment: An imbalance in the alignment of the jaw joint can cause stress on the surrounding muscles, leading to TMJ disorder. This misalignment can result from trauma, such as a blow to the face or jaw, or it may be due to developmental issues.
-
Suture restrictions: blocked occipito-mastoid suture can leads to vertigo, Ear pain, TMJ problems.
-
Bruxism: Teeth grinding or clenching can exert excessive pressure on the jaw joint, causing muscle tension and inflammation. Bruxism often occurs during sleep and can be triggered by stress or an abnormal bite.
-
Stress and Anxiety: Emotional stress and anxiety can contribute to TMJ disorder by inducing muscle tension and leading to unconscious jaw clenching or grinding.
-
Arthritis: Inflammatory conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis, can affect the TMJ, causing pain and stiffness.
-
Poor Posture: Maintaining poor posture, especially when seated for extended periods, can strain the muscles of the jaw and neck, contributing to TMJ disorder.
How osteopathy helps in relieving TMJ pain?
An osteopath works on the alignment of the jaw by working on releasing the surrounding muscles, correct the cranium bones and suture, releasing the fascia and membranes in the skull and face. Through manual therapy, postural correction, stress management, and collaborative care, osteopathy can help individuals find lasting relief from TMJ pain and improve their overall well-being.

My wife was benefitted a lot from using this treatment. We tried all the ways in medical with expert doctors but her pain diagnosis and the real reason were unknown for almost more than 5 years. After meeting with Dr. Shruti, we could understand the reason and with Osteopathy treatment, she was tremendously relieved from the pain. I highly recommend people to do this simple, without medical treatment for their pain issues.
